Dogs have a way of stealing our hearts. They’re not just pets; they’re family! Including your dog in your family portraits is a wonderful way to celebrate the bond you share and capture the personality of every member of your family.
As a Highland Park family photographer serving Chicago’s North Shore, one of my favorite things to photograph is the connection between dogs, children, and their families. I often hear from clients who worry their dog will be “too much trouble.” With a little planning, patience, and a few treats, a family portrait session with your dog can be fun and relaxed for everyone!
Tips for a Successful Family Photo Session With Your Dog
In-Studio Dog Photography
If we're photographing in my Highland Park studio, I recommend arriving a little early so your dog has time to explore and get comfortable with the new surroundings. I'll get down on their level, let them sniff and get to know me, and offer treats to help build trust.
Bringing a favorite toy or blanket from home can help your dog feel more secure. A good walk or play session before your appointment is also a great way to help them settle in. I'll take time to help them get used to the studio lighting and flash, too.
In-Home Family Portraits With Dogs
An in-home family photography session is another wonderful option, especially for dogs who feel most comfortable in familiar surroundings. Beautiful backyards and gardens can provide lovely settings for family portraits, with plenty of room for children to play and interact naturally with their pets.
These sessions are all about capturing your family as you are, including the special relationship you share with your dog.
Dog-Friendly Photography Locations on Chicago’s North Shore
The North Shore has so many beautiful outdoor locations for family and dog photography. Beaches, parks, gardens, and forest preserves offer a variety of natural backdrops throughout the seasons.
Some of my favorite locations include:
Lighthouse Beach in Evanston: A lovely setting for family portraits with dogs, with beautiful natural surroundings.
Harms Woods in Glenview: A peaceful forest preserve with wooded trails and natural scenery.
Ryerson Woods in Riverwoods: A beautiful choice for nature-inspired family and pet portraits.
Elawa Farm in Lake Forest: A charming setting with beautiful landscaping and seasonal scenery.
Sunset Woods in Highland Park and Village Green in Northbrook: Wonderful places for fall family photography, with colorful foliage and open spaces for children to play.
The Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe also offers designated dog-friendly days, making it another location worth considering. Rules, access, and photography permits can vary by location, so we'll check the requirements when planning your session.
Fall is especially popular for outdoor family portraits on the North Shore, but every season has something beautiful to offer. I love capturing children throwing a ball, playing fetch, or simply sharing a quiet moment with their best friend.
What About Leashes, Collars, and Uncooperative Dogs?
Even well-trained dogs can get distracted by new sights, sounds, and smells. For everyone's safety, leashes are often necessary. I sometimes recommend a simple, thin collar without tags and an understated leash that can be easier to remove from photographs during editing when appropriate.
And please don't worry about your dog being perfectly behaved! There's no expectation that they'll sit still and look at the camera the entire time. Some of the most meaningful photographs happen when dogs are simply being themselves.
With patience, treats, and a little flexibility, we can create natural, beautiful family portraits that capture your family's personality and the special place your dog holds in it.
